Anonymous SSIW Poem -P05

Twilight at the Well of Souls

I stand on the brink; Death calls on me.
I look back on the long road of my life.
It trails off to the horizon of my memory,
winding, twisting with unexpected turns.

Was I a good man?
Did I do the something I was supposed to?
Did I fail in whatever it was?
Did I make some people happy?

I had a job.
I loved a wife for forty years.
I raised two children, now grown and gone.
I went on vacations to Disneyland and the Caribbean.
What does it all matter now?

Will my existence create an impression on the universe?
Or was I simply a small ripple in the pond,
to be forgotten the moment I cease to exist?
The memory of me will fade like a hazy mist
when the morning sun shines bright and warm.

Its twilight at the well of souls.

And I am gone, never to return.
