Passages

The soft beauty of autumn,
a feast to the eyes,
fills the soul
as the harvest supper
fills the belly.
Jewel colours gleam
against cerulean skies
and the sun recedes,
marking the cycle of nature,
the passage of time.
Resplendent,
this prelude to winter
brings pain and pleasure
in equal measure--
a reminder of that lesson
learned too well
at the height of summer:
Everything dies.
