"Jane always was the wild type." or so her mother said.
Well, her grade school teachers used to report they had
trouble keeping her in her seat. She'd finish her work first
and if she didn't sit there daydreaming like she was on another planet or something, then she was pretending she was an airplane or a bird...or for all I knew, she thought she
was a mosquito! Buzzing around with her arms out stiff as
she whirred and whirled and sputtered and twirled and then...
well, from out of nowhere, she'd flounce and light and well, it'd just make me uncomfortable. I mean, you never knew when she might haul off and sting somebody, just like that!! Zap!

She was always climbing trees. I thought she just wanted to go up there to spy on people but well, she could beat any of the boys to a pulp if you didn't intervene. I'll tell you, that didn't do much for her dating life when she got to be a teen. But we were glad she enjoyed scouting. That was a good outlet for her; for they did hiking. You know, together.
She was good at wandering off by herself; we liked it when
she was with a team and a leader, learning to use the
compass and things like that.

We figured she'd get her fill of that sort of thing and get
back to piano lessons and things other girls enjoyed,
like cheerleading and flirting with boys and those overnight parties the girls had, where they tried on each others clothes and tried out makeup and all.

Her mother never wanted her to go on that safari, even with her father. Heaven Only knew what was in those woods!
Yes, she was going off to college by that time and she'd be with scientists of varying interests. They'd be with zooologists. They said they only wanted to photograph wild animals as they saw them.

Who could have forseen what would REALLY happen! Jane's
mother's heart was broken was what happened! Jim, that
was her father, came back hanging his head, looking at the floor, shuffling his feet until she screamed at him and wished she had the nerve to fist him! She screamed "What in tarnation is wrong with you, man?!! WHERE is Jane?!!"

He sputtered and splintered his words til she wanted to shake
him and finally he came out with it! Though he was wimpy about it, he came right out with it! She thought she was going to see a grown man cry. He muffled, "She stayed. She said she was staying. And then we couldn't find her!"

"What do you MEAN you couldn't find her?!"

"Well, she wouldn't let us find her."

"James Duncan Whittle! Have you gone insane?!! Have you
taken leave of your last senses?! WHERE is Jane?"

Then he DID cry. It started as a whimper and then his
shoulders shook and then he was like a marionette dummy
with no one pulling his strings! He slinkered to the floor
like he couldn't even crawl!

"You've got to listen to me, Elaine. There was nothing we
could do!"

By that time, she couldn't control herself. "What in God's
name are you talking about, Jim?" she screamed. "TELL
ME! TELL ME now. Whatever it is, tell me!!"

"She fell in love."

"With whom? Somebody on the trip with you?"

"No, it was a ...Good Heavens Elaine, it was a wild man. He
couldn't even speak the King's English! But he cast some kind of spell on her and before I knew it she was swinging on
vines through the trees with him and I don't know where
they went!"

"Did you report him to the authorities? Are they still searching? Do I need to go over there?!"

"There are no authorities. He is the authority...he and his
monkeys and well, it's like he's part animal himself and all the wild animals understand him! And Jane...she took to him."

"Took to him? What do you mean, she "took to him"?!!"

"Well, in a few days time, she was understanding him. She
called him Tarzan and he could say her name."

"Good Lord, Jim, WHAT are you saying?"

Jim seemed to almost calm himself. He said "She's happy,
Elaine. I do declare she's found her soulmate. She in synche
with him. They paddle together. They fly on vines together.
They dive and swim together and she was totally slippery.
There was no way to retrieve her. Elaine, she WANTED TO
stay in that wilderness with that brute! We've lost her but she's fine. She is totally protected and she's finally in her element."

Elaine collapsed.

My point is....they are all around us....like on this screen
surrounding my box here. Sometimes I don't think it's an accident...the words propelling around our heads. Sometimes our head is their target and we're supposed to do something with them ....or....we lose the thought, that time's opportunity. Good idea to bag up lots here. It always
helps me for somebody to pitch me a title. Thanks for doing
this, Niggle. Hope others will dive in and splash with us!!
